Veronica Guerin’s killer Brian Meehan’s request for prison leave dismissed

KILLER Brian Meehan is the latest high profile prisoner to find out that he won’t be allowed out of jail for Christmas this year.

As one of the state’s longest-serving inmates, the former Gilligan gang member is the only person ever to be convicted of the 1996 murder of journalist Veronica Guerin.

Earlier this year he was transferred to an open Shelton Abbey prison in Wicklow, raising the possibility that he might soon begin to be granted temporary release.

However, his request for a three-day release for Christmas was rejected, according to sources.

Meehan has been detained in Ireland since his extradition from the Netherlands in 1998 after a 10-month legal battle and convicted of murder the following year.

Ms. Guerin was shot dead in her car as she pulled to a stop at traffic lights by a gunman in the back of a motorcycle.

Meehan rode the bike while Patrick “Dutchy” Holland was said to be the gunman who shot the reporter at Newlands Cross.

He spent most of his sentence in Portlaoise High Security Prison before being transferred to Wheatfield Prison two years ago.

O’Reilly beat his wife Rachel to death with a dumbbell, then appealed on TV with Rose to find Rachel’s killer.

Another killer, Joe O’Reilly, also had his request for release during the holiday season denied by prison authorities.

The Sunday World revealed earlier this week that O’Reilly, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife Rachel Callaly, filed an application this year.

Rachel’s father Jim said O’Reilly never showed remorse and was happy his candidacy was turned down.

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the usual release of prisoners for Christmas, fearing that returning inmates will spread the virus.
