Political prisoner Zahra Safaei in poor health

Political prisoner Zahra Safaei is in a precarious state of health after suffering a stroke and undergoing heart surgery. She is being held despite confirmation from the medical examiner that she cannot stand the imprisonment.

Zahra Safaei underwent heart surgery at a civic hospital after obstruction from prison authorities. At the hospital, her hands and feet were chained to the bed.

She had heart problems and chest pain for two months, but authorities at Qarchak Prison ignored her conditions. Eventually, she suffered a stroke on August 31.

Although she could not endure the conditions of detention after the heart operation, the authorities sent her back to Qarchak and detained her alongside ordinary prisoners, which violates the principle of separation of crimes.

Security forces arrested Zahra Safaei in Tehran on February 24, 2020. They also arrested Parastoo Mo’ini, her daughter, as well as Forough Taghipour and her mother, Nasim Jabbari. They were then transferred to the detention center of the Ministry of Intelligence (ward 209 of Evin prison). Parastoo Mo’ini and Forough Taghipour were transferred to Qarchak prison in early March 2020.

On June 28, 2020, Zahra Safaei was temporarily released from Qarchak prison, until the end of her trial, on bail of 300 million Toman. But she was arrested again on July 26, 2020, when she appealed to the Evin prison prosecutor’s office to reconsider her case and that of her daughter. On July 27, 2020, she was transferred to Qarchak prison.

She was threatened with death by dangerous criminals lured by the prison director.
