Former KRONK boxer continues Emanuel Steward’s legacy through youth boxing program – CW50 Detroit
Southfield (CW50) – At the young age of 12, Taurrek Fikes found himself in the boxing ring. Under his father’s guidance, Fikes’ boxing trip would have opened a door for him that many in the Detroit area would only dream of.
At age 14, Fikes had the opportunity to train with legendary Detroit boxer Emanuel Steward, where he became a member of the KRONK boxing team.

Emanuel Steward founded the boxing team inside the Kronk Recreation Center after his younger brother wanted to learn how to box. His brother James would win the Golden Gloves tournament in Detroit, putting Emanuel on the map as a coach others wanted to train with. After being named head boxing coach of the Kronk Recreation Center, Emanuel’s team produced 41 world champion fighters throughout his career.

Fikes was a fantastic fighter and now his own trainer. He came to the original KRONK Gym as part of the original ESCOT (Emanuel Steward Champions of Tomorrow) in the early 1980s. After a short amateur career in his twenties, Fikes then joined KRONK as a trainer and has instrumental in revitalizing the amateur program using all of Emanuel’s styles.
After years of training under the KRONK name and colors, he took the “KRONK style” to Atlanta, Georgia with the Dungeon Boxing Gym. The principles and disciplines he learned from Emanuel Steward are continued in his own youth program, modeled after the one he grew up in at KRONK.
