A prisoner awaiting trial escapes from a police van

Police are looking for the prisoner awaiting trial who allegedly escaped from police custody at Cala police station on July 25, 2022 at around 6:00 p.m.

Police spokesman Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said according to police reports, officers were taking the prisoners back to Sada prison when the suspect, Constable Mfundo Ntshiba, escaped while he was dropped from the police vehicle.

“The suspect was first arrested for burglary and kidnapping at one of the locations in Cala. He appeared in court on July 25, 2022, but later escaped after returning from court. A case of escape from unlawful custody has been opened against him for investigation,” Kinana said.

He added that the circumstances under which the suspect escaped were also part of the investigation. He confirmed that the police leadership had set up a special team to search for the fleeing officer.

“Members of the community are advised not to attempt to arrest the suspect as he is considered dangerous, and anyone with information that could lead to his immediate arrest is asked to contact Sergeant Unati Kula on 071 771 3316 or any other nearest police station, the investigation is continuing.
