New Delhi: Prisoners at Tihar prison clashed with guards on Wednesday afternoon, injuring several of them during a search by prison officers, officials with knowledge of the incident said on Thursday.

At least 12 prisoners were injured and rushed to the prison clinic, and four of them were referred to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Hospital for further treatment. Seven prison guards were also injured in the incident, officials added.

In recent weeks, Tihar prison in Delhi has been on high alert after several cases of prisoners using mobile phones to carry out extortion rackets and plan murders came to light. Police say the recent murder of singer and Punjab Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala was also planned from inside Tihar by imprisoned mobster Lawrence Bishnoi and his accomplice, Canada-based mobster Goldie Brar.

Prison officers said they were informed that some prisoners were hiding mobile phones and improvised weapons inside Ward 4, after which they decided to carry out an inspection.

“During a search of Ward 4 of Prison 8, inmates prevented the prison guards from carrying out their duties by mistreating them and fighting with them. The prison staff tried to calm them down and advise them, but some of them refused to listen. They started banging their heads against the walls and injuring themselves with sharp objects. The prison officers managed to contain the situation and sent four detained at DDU Hospital for further medical treatment.

As part of measures to prevent prisoners from engaging in criminal activities or waging war on other gangs, the prison department has transferred at least 30 identified gangsters housed in the three prison complexes of Tihar, Rohini and Mandoli to other prisons.
